Bader Pitches Violets to Game Two Victory

The New York University baseball team split a doubleheader against the College of Staten Island on Sunday, April 26, at MCU Park in Brooklyn. After falling 7-5 in the first game, the Violets rebounded to win game two 7-2.

In game one, the Violets scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to erase a 2-0 deficit. The squad was unable to hold onto its lead, however, as CSI (21-11) scored two in the fifth and three in the seventh to take a 7-4 advantage into the bottom of the seventh.

NYU (19-20) did not go down without a fight. The Violets scored a run in the final inning and had the bases loaded before their rally was cut short and the Dolphins escaped with a win.

Jacob Bader took the mound in game two and dominated the strike zone to help lead the Violets to a win. The righthander allowed just five hits in his six innings of work while striking out two.

"When you lose a close game like we did in game one, the expectation is for the game-two pitcher to come in and throw strikes and get ground balls," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "Jacob did just that from the moment he stepped on the mound."

The Violets scored the first two runs of the contest in the bottom of the first and were able to hold onto their lead for the duration of the game. NYU added insurance runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings en route to the 7-2 victory.

Bader handed the ball to Matthew Millus to begin the seventh inning and Millus was able to close the game without any harm and help the Violets earn a split.

NYU played great defense in the game to help Bader solidify the victory. Christian Bloom and Jeremy Wayne each made highlight plays in the field to save hits.

"Our defense cleaned some things up and made some big plays in game two," added Kimbler. "Those plays came at critical times and could've been the difference between getting a win or getting swept."

Game One Highlights:

- Wayne led NYU with two hits.

- Bloom, Michael Vokulich and Matthew Miller each had an RBI.

- Scott Hilbrandt reached base safely twice, each time by a walk.

- Bloom and Adrian Spitz each had a stolen base.

Game Two Highlights:

- Spitz was 3-for-4 and added an RBI. The sophomore also stole another base.

- Billy Griffo finished the contest 2-for-2. The freshman also added an RBI.

- Vokulich and Jonathan Iaione each had two RBIs to lead the squad.

- Bloom scored three runs in the victory.

"Good teams find a way not to get swept," concluded Kimbler. "Now we'll turn our attention to getting another win tomorrow."

The Violets will look to get to .500 tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA, for a 4:00 pm game.
