Scheiwiller Hits First-Ever Softball Grand Slam

Violets Fall 12-4 at UAA Championship

Despite the first grand slam in the history of New York University varsity softball, the Violets dropped a 12-4 decision to Case Western Reserve University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship game in Altamonte Springs, FL, on Thursday, March 12.

Sage Scheiwiller's four-bagger in the top of the fourth cleared the centerfield fence and brought the Violets (0-9, 0-5) into a tie with the Spartans (9-1, 4-1) at 4-4.

Case had scored three runs in the top of the first, but the damage was limited as Colby Tarsitano, one day after making a grand-slam-robbing catch in center field, made another over-the-fence catch on Thursday. This time, it saved a three-run home run, though two runs scored on the sacrifice fly.

The score remained 4-4 until the bottom of the fourth when the Spartans scored three unearned runs with two outs. The Violets could not recover, and did not score again. The Spartans added five more in the bottom of the sixth to account for the final score.

NOTABLES:

- Scheiwiller also had a single in the first inning and is batting a team-leading .370.

- Jacqueline Tremblay pitched NYU's first-ever compete game.

- Natalie Evans recorded a hit, a run scored and a stolen base.

- Tarsitano had a single and scored a run.

- Marisa Bella drew a walk and scored a run.

The Violets return to action with two more UAA Championship games tomorrow. NYU faces #8 (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) Emory University at 10:00 am and Brandeis University at 1:00 pm.
