The #9-ranked New York University men's volleyball team (American Volleyball Coaches Association) lost 3-1 to #10 Baruch College on Tuesday night, February 24, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.The Violets (7-4) took the first set, but couldn't hold the advantage en route to a 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 loss to the Bearcats (8-3).
NYU dominated the first set, which began with three kills by Nick Benson. The junior hitter garnered four more kills after that, leading the VIolets to a 25-20 win.
The Violets trailed most of the the second set, tying briefly at 13-13 before losing 25-22. The third set was just a bit closer as NYU came within two points of a win.In the last set, NYU trailed 10-2 before rallying to tie the game at 16-16. Despite two killer blocks by
Phil Bueno, NYU could not close the deal, and lost the set 25-21.
"We were able to keep close with them in every set, but we were not able to take the lead," said Head Coach
Jose Pina. "Every time we got within one or two points of them, we would make a mistake, either missing a serve or not getting a good swing on an easy ball."
HIGHLIGHTS:- Benson led all players with 18 kills and a .438 hitting percentage.- Patrick Merrick had a match-high 30 assists.- Bueno finished the match with eight blocks to lead all players.The Violets return to the court next Wednesday, March 4, when they host #2 Stevens Institute of Technology at 6:00 PM.
