Wrestlers Win Fourth Straight UAA Title

Defeat Chicago and Case Western Reserve to Take Crown

Match Results

The New York University men's wrestling team won its fourth straight University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, defeating both the University of Chicago and Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, February 14, in Cleveland, OH.

NYU, now 20-3 in dual meets this season and riding a 13-match winning streak, first defeated Chicago 26-12 and then host Case Western Reserve 47-6 to capture another UAA title.

"We aim to do this every year and we were successful again today," said NYU Head Coach Bruce Haberli. "The guys were outstanding."

Patrick Sheehan, who earned a 9-0 major decision victory by shutting out Chicago's Nick Dinapoli, was named UAA Most Outstanding Wrestler.

"Patrick went up against a really tough wrestler and crushed him," Haberli explained. "Pat's a senior and a three-time UAA Champion. He's well deserving of the honor."

NYU has now posted the highest one-season win total in team history.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- In addition to Sheehan (who won by forfeit vs. CWRU), five other NYU wrestlers won two matches: Nathan Pike (133), Brandon Jones (141), Matthew Coppola (149), Matt DiGiovanni (157), and John Messinger (165).

- Pike produced one major decision win (15-4) and one technical fall (15-0, 4:09).

- Jones recorded a fall (1:34) and a major decision (15-6).

- Coppola won by technical fall (19-4, 7:00) and decision (9-7).

- DiGiovanni's victories came by major decision (9-0) and forfeit.

- Messenger produced one fall (2:29) in addition to a 5-2 victory over Chicago's Paul Papoutsis.

"John had a great win against Chicago. The kid he beat is a stud," Haberli said. "John lost to him last year, but dominated this time. He took him down early and never let him back into the match."

Next up for the grapplers will be the final dual meet of the season, as NYU travels to Daniel Webster College in Nashua, NH, next Saturday, February 21.
