UAA Live Video and Stats | Centennial Live Video The New York University wrestling team will be split between the University Athletics Association (UAA) Championship and the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday, February 14.
NYU, ranked #24 in the most recent National Wrestling Coaches Association poll (NWCA) has an overall record of 18-3 and is currently on an 11-match win streak, including an 8-0 record in the Centennial Conference.The grapplers will bring 12 athletes to Cleveland, OH, to compete in the UAA Championships, hosted by Case Western Reserve University. The split squad will be led by three senior co-captains:
Brandon Jones (141 pounds),
Matt DiGiovanni (157 pounds) and
Patrick Sheehan (184 pounds). Jones and Sheehan are currently ranked #3 and #10 in their respective weight classes by the NWCA. Also competing at the UAA for NYU is sophomore
Matthew Coppola (149 pounds), a two-time UAA Athlete of the Week this season, and freshman
Raymond Jazikoff (157 pounds), the
Ithaca Invitational and
Mat Mayhem runner-up.
The #24-ranked grapplers have won the last three UAA titles, includng
last years at the Coles Sports Center. The squad will wrestle the University of Chicago at 11:00 am. The loser of that match will wrestle Case Western at 12:30 pm, while the winner of the first match will take on the host Spartans at 2:00 pm.
At the Centennial Conference Championships, hosted by McDaniel College in Westminster, MD, NYU wrestling will be represented by 10 grapplers. Leading the squad at McDaniel will be senior co-captain
DJ Albonico (149 pounds), who boasts a 17-7 record and a second-place finish at the Mat Mayhem earlier this season, and sophomore
Wayne Yuan (13-10, third at the Mat Mayhem).
Competition at both the UAA and Centennial Championships will begin Saturday at 11:00 am. Check in after the action at
