Women's Soccer Defeats Rochester 1-0 on the Road

Violets Pick up Second UAA Victory of Season

The New York University women's soccer team defeated the University of Rochester 1-0 on Friday evening, October 30, on the road in Rochester, NY.

The Violets (12-4, 2-3 University Athletic Association) and Yellowjackets (8-6-1, 2-3 UAA) held each other scoreless for the majority of the contest until NYU's Melissa Menta broke through in the 70th minute for her fourth goal of the season.

The Violets' senior captain was the beneficiary of three Yellowjackets going for the ball at once at midfield -- including their keeper. Fazio was able to feed Menta just inside the box for the score on the open net.

"It was great to get the win on the road," said NYU Head Coach Michele Canning. "The team fought hard and came up with a really composed finish."

Overall, NYU was able to hold the slight advantage against the Yellowjackets with its offensive pressure, outshooting the home squad 14-9, including 9-5 in shots on net.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Cassie Steinberg recorded five stops against Rochester for her 10th shutout of the season. The junior keeper now has 22 for her career and is second all-time in program history behind Becca Giefer's 27.

"Cassie did a fantastic job making a couple of big saves at the end of the game to preserve the shutout," continued Canning.

- Menta led all players with three shots on goal. Olivia Braender-Carr and Lexi Clarke each attempted two.

- NYU's 12 victories ties for third-best all-time in program history. The Violets won 13 games in 2001 and a record-14 in 2011.

NYU will return to action when they travel to Atlanta, GA, to face Emory University on Sunday, November 1. The Violets' penultimate regular-season contest against the Eagles is scheduled to kick-off at 11:00 am.
