Emory 86 NYU 82
The New York University men's baketball team fell at home for the first time this season, losing to Emory University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) match-up 86-82 on Friday night, January 24, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The contest was tight throughout, as the Violets (11-4, 1-3 UAA) and the Eagles (11-4, 3-1) exchanged leads seven times and tied another 10 times.
NYU trailed by six points at the break, but outplayed Emory in the second half and outscored the Eagles 43-41. With 17:30 remaining and the Violets trailing by nine, NYU went on an 11-1 run to take their first lead of the second half. NYU was able to take two more slim two-point leads, but the Eagles took over at the 8:40 mark and never looked back.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Sophomore forward
Evan Kupferberg scored a team-high 20 points and recorded his sixth double-double of the season by grabbing 11 rebounds.
- Senior co-captain guard
Ryan Tana chipped in with 17 points, dished out three assists and pulled down four boards.
- Sophomore center
Costis Gontikas scored 13 points, adding five rebounds and a block.
- Junior
Iyoha Agho (three rebounds, one assist), sophomores
Max Ralby (five assists, two steals, two rebounds) and
Patrick Burns (four rebounds, one block), and freshman
Alec Papesch (10 rebounds, three assists) and
Joe Timmes (four rebounds) all chipped in with six points.
The Violets will be back on the court when they host the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon, January 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Coles.
