Box Score

Following an eight-day layoff, the #21 New York University men's basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season, falling 60-50 to visiting New Jersey City University on Monday, December 3, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (4-1) started the game scorching hot, going 7-9 from the field to go up 18-8. From there, however, NYU shot just 8-35 (22.9%) the rest of the way.

Highlights

- Devin Karch scored nine points during the opening spurt, including a three-point play, to help the Violets build a 10-point lead just 4:17 in.

- The Gothic Knights (2-4) held NYU to just one field goal the rest of half, and none in the final 8:08 of the period. On the strength of its defense, New Jersey City went on a 21-6 run to enter halftime leading 31-24.

- The Violets fought back in the second half and eventually took their first lead, 49-48, with 5:55 left on a pair of Karch free throws. But, the Gothic Knights' defense again took over after that, limiting NYU to just a pair of made free throws the rest of the game.

- Karch paced the Violets with 15 points on 5-7 shooting. Carl Yaffe added 14 points and 12 rebounds to record his 10th career double-double.

- The loss snapped NYU's home non-conference winning streak at 24 games.

The Violets return to action on Wednesday, December 5, when they host The College at Old Westbury at Coles at 7:00 pm.
