Women's Hoops Season Opens Tuesday, Men This Weekend

Violet Women Travel to York, Both Teams Host Weekend Tournament

Basketball season begins on Tuesday, November 15, for New York University when the women's team travels to York College in Jamaica, Queens, for a 6:00 pm contest.

The men's team will open its 2011-12 season this weekend when it hosts its annual Tip-Off Tournament at the Coles Sports Center. NYU will begin play on Saturday, Nov. 19, when it faces The College of New Jersey at 1:00 pm. Depending on the game's outcome, the Violets will either play at 1:00 pm (Third-Place Game) or 3:00 pm (Championship) on Sunday.
 
The women will also host their Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend, on Friday and Saturday. NYU will take on Clarkson University at 6:00 pm on Friday and will play either at 6:00 pm (Third-Place Game) or 8:00 pm (Championship) on Saturday.

The Violet women will be looking to improve upon a 2010-11 season in which they went 12-13 overall and 6-8 in the ultracompetitive University Athletic Association (UAA).
 
NYU returns one starter from last season's squad – Bianca Storts (9.1 ppg) – and will look to several of last year's key reserves, including Cara Bonito (3.2 apg), Tana Bertino (6.7 ppg), Alexis Doherty (3.8 rpg), Shelby Coon (5.0 rpg), Makenzie Hirz (3.8 rpg), and Erica Franke (2.3 rpg) – to take on bigger roles.
 
The Violet men went 16-11 overall in 2010-11 and 4-10 in the UAA. The squad reached the semifinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Championship and recorded its 27th winning season in the last 28 years.
 
NYU returns four starters from last year's team – First Team All-UAA selection Andy Stein (17.3 ppg), Carl Yaffe (11.4 ppg), Kyle Stockmal (9.6 ppg), and Max Wein (4.1 rpg). Other key returners include Devin Karch, Ben Dorman, Cory Stockmal, and Ryan Tana
