The New York University women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of #17 Rowan University in the opening game of the Stockton Classic in Pomona, NJ, on Saturday, September 4.
The Violets (0-2) allowed all three goals in the game's first 16 minutes but settled down after that, keeping the nationally ranked Profs (2-0) off the scoreboard while turning up their own offensive intensity.
“As the game went on we definitely got stronger,” said head coach Werner T. Dasbach. “They couldn't get behind us in the second half or even in the last part of the first half. We showed we can play with a team of this caliber.”
Jess Babice, a Third Team All-American a year ago, starred on offense for Rowan, netting all three of the team's goals. She found the back of the net just 25 seconds into the game and added tallies in the 11th and 16th minutes.
After the rough start NYU began to turn things around late in the first half. Following the break the Violets pressed looking to get on the board, and senior Emily Jenkinson nearly erased the shutout with a strike that the Rowan keeper had to punch out at the last moment.
“We were able to test the keeper in the second half,” noted Dasbach. “Not only we were able to negate a strong team on defense, but we created a few opportunities of our own.”
NYU returns to action tomorrow when it takes on the tournament's host, Richard Stockton College, at 3 pm.
