The New York University women's volleyball team defeated both Gettysburg College and host Haverford College in a tri-match Wednesday night, September 22, in Haverford, PA.
With the two victories, the Violets (14-2) are off to their best start since the 2006 season.
“I'm very happy with the way the girls came together and battled tonight,” said interim head coach Chris Pinto. “Playing two matches back-to-back during the week is a tough task, and they proved they were up to the challenge.”
In the first match of the evening, NYU swept by the Bullets of Gettysburg (5-9) in one hour (25-13, 25-23, 25-16).
Leading the offense for the Violets was Erin McLaughlin, who notched 12 kills while also putting up 10 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Kendyl Dunn and Beth Fionda were also in double-digits on offense, with Dunn putting down 10 kills while Fionda added 11 with a .647 hitting percentage.
On defense, Rachel Sawyer led the Violets with 16 digs and also added three service aces.
Also in double-digits was Natalie Fernandez, who added 10 digs along with two service aces.
Alexis Schwartz recorded a career-best seven service aces while also putting up nine digs.
For the Bullets, Sarah Gorski recorded six kills while Rebecca Rubenstein added 11 digs.
In the second match of the evening, the Violets survived losing the second set 29-27 to win a hard-fought match, besting the host Fords (5-8) 3-1 (25-17, 27-29, 25-23, 25-15).
In the match, Jessica Prepolec led all players with a career-best 18 kills while also adding three digs and a solo block.
Fionda continued her strong play as she recorded an NYU career-high 13 kills while hitting .312 with three digs.
McLaughlin rounded out the players in double-digits on offense as she notched 10 kills and a career-best 18 digs for her second double-double of the day.
Also strong on defense were Schwartz and Sawyer, who recorded 14 and 12 digs respectively, while Schwartz also added two service aces.
For the Fords Haley Lowrance recorded 12 kills, while Caitlyn Tranquillo put up a match-high 28 digs.
The Violets return to action this weekend when they play host to the annual Violet Classic. First up for NYU will be the City College of New York, with first serve set for 4:00 pm.
