The New York University women's volleyball team swept Nazareth College to win its seventh Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational title in the last eight years on Saturday, September 18, in Rochester, NY.
The Violets (12-2), currently ranked #23 in the AVCA Division III Coaches' Poll, extended their winning streak against the Golden Flyers (5-8) to 11 matches, including the last three RIT Invitational championship matches, with their 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-20) win.
Leading NYU on offense was tournament MVP Kendyl Dunn, who put down a match-high 13 kills and hit .414. On defense the sophomore put down two solo blocks and added four digs. For the weekend Dunn led the team with 56 kills, a .382 hitting percentage and nine blocks while also adding 17 digs.
Also named to the All-Tournament Team was Erin McLaughlin, who tallied eight kills while adding 11 digs. Over the course of the weekend the freshman notched 46 kills and nine service aces while putting up 41 digs on defense.
Libero Rachel Sawyer extended her double-digit dig streak to six matches by putting up a season-high 20 in the win over Nazareth. For the weekend the senior led the team with 65 digs while also serving up a team-best 14 aces.
Setter Mina Baban put together a strong all-around weekend capped off with a 32-assist, nine-dig performance against the Golden Flyers. For the weekend Baban tallied 148 assists (10.5 per set) along with 30 digs and four service aces.
For Nazareth, Kristi Custer and Amy Johnson both recorded nine kills while Christina Pelletier added 14 digs.
In its first match of the day, the Violets swept SUNY Geneseo for the second time in three weeks to win Pool B and advance to the championship match.
The Violets held the Knights (4-9) to a negative hitting percentage for the second straight match, winning 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-10) in just over an hour.
Recording her third consecutive double-digit kill match, McLaughlin led the team with 11 kills and a .400 hitting percentage while also adding five digs and a block on defense.
On defense, Sawyer led all players with 12 digs while also tallying a career-high tying seven service aces.
For the Knights, Krista Frieling recorded nine kills while Noelle Morrison added nine digs.
The Violets return to action on Wednesday night when they travel south to Haverford, PA, to take part in the Haverford College tri-match. NYU will take on Gettysburg College at 6:00 pm and host Haverford at 7:30 pm.
