Women's Volleyball Falls in Elite Eight to #3 Washington University

Violets Complete Best Season Since 2005 with a 38-6 Record

The New York University women's volleyball team saw its 2010 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship run end in the Elite Eight with a straight set loss to National Championship host Washington University on Friday, November 19, in St. Louis, MO.

The Violets (38-6), ranked #15 in the AVCA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll, fell 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-10) to the defending National Champions and third-ranked Bears (25-3) in front of 1,500 screaming WashU fans.

“It was a great season,” said interim head coach Chris Pinto.  “It was a great journey for the team this year and a great experience here at WashU.”

Leading the offense for NYU was Sally Downs, who tallied six kills along with a team-high two service aces. 

Also notching six kills was Erin McLaughlin, who also put up three digs.

On defense, Alexis Schwartz led the team with 14 digs, extending her NYU-record season  total to 581.

For the Bears, Lauren Budde led all players with 14 kills and hit .458, while Kelly Pang added a match-high 24 digs.

The Violets conclude their 2010 campaign with a 38-6 record, the most wins by the program since 2004, while also reaching the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time since 2005.

“I feel like we built a really strong foundation this year,” concluded Pinto.  “And we look forward to lots of success for years to come.”
