MIT Invitational Saturday Results
The New York University snapped its two match losing streak by sweeping Bowdoin College to secure seventh place at the MIT Invitational, Saturday, September 26, in Cambridge, MA.
The Violets (14-3) recovered from two tough weekend loses to easily defeat the Polar Bears (6-5) 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 26-24).
Leading NYU on offense was sophomore captain Elizabeth Dick who put down 15 kills along with 12 digs for her third double-double of the season. For the weekend, Dick tallied 38 kills, seven service aces and 45 digs.
Freshman Kendyl Dunn also put together a strong match, tallying nine kills while hitting .364 and adding a team-high three blocks. Dunn led the team with 51 kills over the weekend while hitting .370 along with 10 blocks.
On defense, junior Rachel Sawyer tied her own NYU rally-scoring record for digs in a three-set match by notching 23. For the weekend, Sawyer tallied 71 digs to move into third-place on the NYU rally-scoring career digs list with 1,088.
Also putting up double-digit digs were sophomore Mina Baban and freshman Natalie Fernandez. Baban tallied 11 digs while putting up 34 assists while Fernandez notched 17 and also recorded a team-high four service aces.
For the Polar Bears, sophomore Kristin Hanczor put down 10 kills while fellow sophomore Jillian Berkman put up 17 digs.
In the NYU's first match of the day, the team fell to Springfield College in the semifinals of the Silver Bracket.
The Violets fell down 0-2 early to the Pride (12-2), however, NYU attempted to rally back, winning the third set before letting a 20-13 lead slip away in the fourth set to fall 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22).
On offense, Dunn continued to put up big numbers, tallying a team-high 15 kills along with two blocks and two service aces.
Fernandez notched her second straight double-double, putting down 12 kills and 12 digs.
Sophomores Kolby Warren and Dick were also in double-digits for NYU with Warren notching 10 while Dick added 11 and nine digs.
On defense, Sawyer also put up double-digit digs, notching 10.
For the Pride, Lauren Torvi recorded a match-high 18 kills while Meaghan Hart put up 16 digs.
The Violets return to the court on Wednesday when they host Vassar College at 7:00 pm.
