The New York University women's volleyball team swept past the University of Rochester and Case Western Reserve University on the first day of the 2009 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday, Nov. 6, at the University of Chicago.
In the first match of the weekend, the Violets (28-7, 6-3 UAA) defeated the Yellowjackets (17-19, 0-9 UAA) for the third time in 2009, sweeping them 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-23).
Leading the offense for NYU was freshman Kendyl Dunn, who put down a team-high 12 kills and hit .321 while adding two blocks.
Also putting together a strong performance at the net was freshman Shelby Oliver. She tallied seven kills while hitting a match-high .538.
On defense, freshman Alexis Schwartz tallied her 17th double-digit dig performance of the season, putting up a team-high 14.
Sophomore captain Elizabeth Dick was also in double-digits on defense, putting up 11 while adding five kills and two service aces.
For the Yellowjackets, Kelly Mulrey tallied a match-high 17 kills and 10 digs, while Lauren Bujnicki also put up 10 digs.
In their second match of the day, the Violets faced off against the Spartans (22-8, 3-6 UAA), a team that took NYU to five sets in the second UAA Round Robin. However, this time the story was a bit different as the Violets won in three sets (25-21, 28-26, 25-19).
Once again, Dunn led the way on offense. She put down 13 kills while hitting .33 with a team-high five blocks and four digs.
Also in double-digits on offense was freshman Natalie Fernandez, who tallied 11 kills and hit .500 with four blocks (two solos).
Tallying her 11th double-double of the season, Dick notched 10 kills along with a team-high 14 digs.
Also in double-digits on defense was junior Rachel Sawyer who put up 13 digs.
For the Spartans, Tricia McCutchan notched 13 kills while Andrea Lamont added 19 digs.
The Violets return to action tomorrow when they take on Washington University in the Pool A title match. The winner of the match will play for the UAA title. First serve is set for 12:00 pm.
