The New York University women's volleyball team fought back from a slow start and an 0-1 deficit to defeat Chapman University 3-1 and win the Whittier College Tournament, Saturday, September 20, in Whittier, CA.

The Violets (13-4) started off the match sluggishly, falling behind the Panthers (7-6) 10-2.  NYU attempted a rally, reeling off five straight points behind the serving of sophomore Annie Baer, but it was not enough as the team fell 25-17 in set one.

The Violets came out ready to play in the second set, holding Chapman to no more than a three-point lead early on.  After a Panther timeout at 17-16, NYU went on a run, taking three of the next four points.  Another Chapman timeout at 20-17 could not stop the NYU run as the Violets took the set 25-21.

Bolstered by the second-set win, the Violets came out and took the lead early in the the third set and did not look back.  Freshman Elizabeth Dick and sophomore Erin Noonan combined for nine kills and zero errors in the set as the Violets won 25-20.

In the fourth set, NYU fell behind early and the match appeared to be going to five.  After an early six-point deficit at 10-4, however, the Violets went on a run, taking 12 of the next 18 points to tie the set at 16.  The two teams traded points until an attack error by Chapman and a service ace by Dick gave the Violets some breathing room.  NYU went on to take three of the next five points to secure the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

On offense for the Violets, Dick led the way with 14 kills while adding 14 digs for her third double-double of the season.  Also taking control on offense was sophomore Kasey Estes who put down 13 kills.

Along with Dick on defense, freshman Britney Messier recorded 14 digs while sophomore Rachel Sawyer added 10 more.

The Violets will return after a week off on Saturday, October 4, when they travel to Pittsburgh, PA, for the first of the UAA Round Robins.
