The New York University women's volleyball had its five-match winning streak snapped by the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a 3-1 loss on Friday, September 19, in Claremont, CA.
The Violets (11-3) came out slow in the first set against the Athenas (8-4), falling behind 17-11 midway through the set. NYU quickly rallied to tie the score at 20 behind two kills from junior
Jess Storer and four attack errors by CMS. NYU could not continue the rally, however, dropping five of the next seven points to fall in the set 25-22.
In the second set, NYU again found itself down early. However, the team dug itself into too deep a hole early and could not recover, eventually losing 25-11.
NYU found its stride in the third set, keeping the Athenas close throughout and trailing by no more than three through most of the set. The Violets eventually took their first lead at 27-26 off a kill by freshman
Kolby Warren. The two teams traded points and found themselves tied at 28-28 before a service error gave the Violets the edge at 29-28 and a kill by freshman
Elizabeth Dick sealed the set 30-28.
In the fourth set, the Violets found themselves again down early, trailing 17-10 at the midway point. NYU again tried to rally, but this time fell short, dropping the final set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
Leading the way on offense for the Violets was sophomore
Erin Noonan, who recorded a team-high 14 kills while hitting .333. Storer also recorded double-digit kills, putting down 11.
Along the back line, freshman
Britney Messier had another strong match, putting up 25 digs.
The Violets return to action this evening at 7:00 pm (PST) when they take on the University of La Verne. The Leopards are currently ranked third in the latest AVCA Division III Coaches Poll.
