The New York University volleyball team swept the University of Rochester to finish in seventh place at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Volleyball Championship on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
Coming off a rough day and a half, the Violets (23-16, 3-8 UAA) came out firing against the eight-seeded Yellowjackets (11-24, 0-11 UAA). After a 14-14 tie, NYU went on an 11-6 run to close out the first set 25-20 behind six kills from sophomore
Kasey Estes.
In the second set, after an early 5-5 tie, the Violets went on a 13-4 and eventually won 25-14.
The third set followed suit for NYU. After an early 6-6 tie, freshman
Elizabeth Dick went on a 10-point serving run which included three aces and extended the Violets' lead to 16-6. After that point the two teams traded points as NYU went on to take the 25-17 win.
On offense, Estes had a break-out match, putting down a match-high 14 kills against zero errors while hitting .538.
Also strong on offense, sophomore
Erin Noonan recorded nine kills while hitting .667 with recording two service aces and a block.
Along the back line, sophomore
Rachel Sawyer put up a match-high 15 digs while Dick added 11 along with five service aces.
For the Yellowjackets, Cat Kane recorded eight digs while Tayler Schweigel added seven.
Earlier in the day, NYU fell to Case Western Reserve University 3-1.
The Violets came out slow against the Spartans (19-14, 4-6 UAA), dropping the first two sets 25-19, 25-17.
In the third set, NYU showed some life, jumping out to a 17-7 lead off of strong serving from Dick and Sawyer. The Spartans mounted a comeback, pulling within 20-16. However, three kills from Dick in the final five points sealed it for NYU 25-17.
In the fourth set the Violets held it close early, and even took the lead at 11-10. However, a 5-0 run gave the Spartans the lead for good at 15-11. NYU held it close, coming within two at 22-20, but could not get any closer in the 25-21 defeat.
On defense, freshman
Britney Messier made NYU rally-scoring history, setting the single-season digs record, surpassing Martha Gardikas's 463 in 2003. Messier picked up eight digs in the match and now has 466 on the season.
"We're very proud of the way Messier has progressed through the season," said head coach
Ed Caesar. "We're expecting her to break the record again next season."
Also strong on defense, Sawyer picked up a match-high 25 digs while senior captain
Stacy Goto was also in double-digits with 11.
On offense, Dick led the team with 13 kills while also adding eight digs and two service aces.
For the Spartans, Tricia McCutchan recorded a match-high 16 kills while Andrea Lamont put up 22 digs.
The Violets will now await word of a potential NCAA or ECAC Metro/Upstate Championship invitation. The NCAA Championship field will be announced Sunday night with the ECAC bids coming out Monday.
