Women's Volleyball Drops Two at the UAA Championship

The New York University women's volleyball team fell to Carnegie Mellon University three sets to one to fall to 0-2 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Volleyball Championship, Friday, Nov. 7, at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.

The Violets (22-15, 2-7 UAA) held the match close with the Tartans (21-14, 6-3 UAA) in the first two set, However, 18 combined attack errors held NYU back as it fell 25-22 and 25-19.

In the third set NYU, improved its play.  The team took a 23-16 lead on an eight-point run during  sophomore Rachel Sawyer's serve.  Combined with four Tartan attack errors during that streak, the Violets went on to a 25-17 victory.

In set four, the teams traded points for a while.  However, a late run by Carnegie gave them the final set 25-21.

On offense, the Violets had three player in double digits with sophomore Kasey Estes and freshman Elizabeth Dick putting down 13 kills each, while sophomore Annie Baer added 12.

On defense, Sawyer put up a team-high 17 digs.
 
For the Tartans, Caroline Size recorded a team-high 11 kills while Cameron Griffin put up 17 digs.

In the first match of the day, the team fell to Washington University in straight sets.

The Violets held it close with the fourth-ranked Bears (28-6, 8-1 UAA), however, poor passing and 25 hitting errors hampered NYU's offense as it fell 25-16, 25-18, 25-18.

On offense, NYU was led by Estes, who was the only player on either side in double-digits, recording 10 kills while hitting .333.

On the back line, Sawyer recorded a match-high 19 digs.

For the Bears, Nikki Morrison led the way with eight kills while Audra Janak put up 10 digs.

The Violets return to action tomorrow when they face Case Western Reserve University at 9:00 am (CST).
