In their second match at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin competition, the New York University women's volleyball team fought back from an 0-2 hole and defeated Brandeis University 3-2 on Sunday, Oct. 5, in Pittsburgh, PA.
After a 3-2 loss to the University of Chicago on Saturday, the Violets (14-5, 1-1 UAA) fell behind the Judges (9-6, 0-2 UAA) early and continued to trail throughout most of the first set. After Brandeis went up 24-21, the Violets rallied to tie the set at 24-24 behind a kill from junior
Jess Storer followed by a block from sophomore
Erin Noonan and freshman
Jillian Tremmel. However, the Judges reeled off three of the next four points to take the set 27-25.
In the second set, NYU again fell behind early and never mustered in a 25-18 loss to the Judges.
The Violets began to show life again midway through the third set. After NYU took its first lead at 12-11 off a kill from sophomore
Annie Baer, Brandeis quickly regained the lead at 16-15. This time, however, NYU rallied and took the lead for good off a kill from freshman
Mina Baban on its way to a 25-22 win.
In the fourth set, the Violets appeared to have lost their momentum and fell behind 8-3. The team proved, however, that they were not going away. NYU quickly battled back to an 8-8 tie and took its first lead off a Brandeis attack error. The two teams traded points up through 23-23, at which point a kill by Baer and an attack error by Brandeis gave the Violets the fourth set 25-23.
The Violets went into the fifth set will a head of steam, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Brandeis put together a rally, tying the match at 9-9 before kills from Noonan and freshman
Elizabeth Dick, as well as a Judges' service error, gave NYU the lead for good as the Violets went on the take the final set 15-13.
Noonan recorded a season-high 20 kills and hit .298, while sophomore
Kasey Estes recorded seven kills with only one error in three sets.

For the Judges, sophomore Paige Blasco led the way with 15 kills while senior Lorraine Wingenbach put up a team-high 18 digs.
