Sophomore forward James Walkinshaw recorded a hat-trick and added an assist as the NYU mens soccer team posted a 5-0 win over Rutgers-Newark Thursday, September 5 at Alumni Field in Newark, New Jersey. NYU improved its season record to 2-0.

Walkinshaw opened the scoring for the Violets with a penalty-kick goal just 1:25 into the match. He struck again in the 36th minute by drilling a precise through pass from junior captain Scott Gwartz into the back of Rutgers net. NYU increased its lead to 3-0 in the 41st minute, as freshman midfielder Ryan Brown hammered home a Walkinshaw cross from the flank.

Walkinshaw captured his first career hat-trick in the 46th minute, as he finished off a pass from freshman forward Jake Stolarski to make it a 4-0 game. Gwartz put the finishing touches on NYUs dominating display in the 88th minute by heading home a cross from junior midfielder Franklin Skoch.

Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Colunga needed just two saves to earn his second consecutive shutout victory, as the Violets outshot Rutgers-Newark, 25-3.

NYU returns to action Wednesday, September 11, at 4 p.m. when they travel to take on the Lions of the College of New Jersey.
