Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Colunga recorded 10 saves for a shutout as the NYU men's soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Violets' first game of the season, held at Riverbank State Park in Manhattan on Sunday, September 1st.

Colunga made four saves in the first half and six in the second, many of the spectacular variety, to preserve NYU's well-earned shutout.

Freshman Tyler Akin opened the scoring for the Violets in the 39th minute by deflecting a precise pass from the flank by sophomore James Walkinshaw into the back of Rensselaer's net.

Junior captain Scott Gwartz, with a sudden burst of speed down the wing, added a second goal for NYU in the 61st minute as he raced by three RPI defenders and pushed the ball past Rensselaer's goalkeeper, Greg Goehle.

The Violets put the game away in the 71st minute, as freshman Jake Stolarski hammered home a through pass from sophomore Ryan Haney.
