The New York University men's soccer team won its first-ever ECAC Division III Metro Championship, defeating top-seeded New Jersey City University 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in Jersey City, NJ.

After a scoreless first half, NYU freshman Dana Boskoff converted a header into the upper right corner of the net after taking a crossing pass from sophomore Scott Gwartz. The goal came just 3:20 into the second half.

The Violets' insurance goal was scored by freshman James Walkinshaw with just 6:17 remaining in the contest. He took a breakaway pass from freshman Travis Tucker and beat the Gothic Knights' charging goalkeeper, Baba Guisse.

NYU freshman goalkeeper Adam Colunga recorded all of his six saves in the first half when the Violets were outshot 9-5. In the tournament, Colunga held all three of NYU's opponents scoreless. The Violets, seeded #3, defeated #6 Rutgers-Camden 1-0 on Wednesday and blanked #2 United States Merchant Marine Academy 2-0 on Saturday. Colunga recorded 21 saves in the three games and was named Most Valuable Player. He recorded 10.5 shutouts overall this season.

"I'm very happy for the players. They played very hard all season long and really wanted this game today," said Violets' head coach Joe Behan, who has posted a 48-56-5 record in six seasons at NYU. "It's taken a little while, but I always knew that we could have a winning program here at NYU. I'm just elated."

In addition to winning the Championship, the Violets set a team record with 14 wins, finishing the 2001 season at 14-6. New Jersey City (17-7) also set a team record for wins.

NYU's women's soccer team captured the women's championship with a 1-0 win over Montclair State last Sunday.
