The New York University wrestling team finished its competition at the New York State Championships, which wrapped up on Sunday, January 22, at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.

NYU finished 13th out of 16 teams, but only had eight wrestlers competing in the championship that featured both NCAA Division I and Division III programs. For many of NYU's grapplers, this championship marked their first time facing Division I competition.

The highlight of the two-day championship for NYU was the performance of Matt DiGiovanni, who finished in seventh place at 141 pounds and earned All-State recognition.

“Matt wrestled very tough this weekend,” explained assistant coach Corey Luce. “He continues to impress in the 141-pound weight class and he's going to play a very important role in the success of this team in the coming weeks.”

In the “A” bracket, DiGiovanni went 3-2 over the course of the competition, improving his record to 16-4 at the 141-pound weight class.

Also receiving All-State honors for NYU was Jake Pawlowski (184). He wrestled well on Sunday, going 1-1 and finishing fifth.

Dan Gorman, who went 1-2 on the weekend, just missed receiving All-State honors but still posted a top-10 finish. Sam Friedfeld (157), Chris Amro (165), Pat Sheehan (174), and Rudy De La Cruz (285), who each went 0-2 in their respective weight classes, rounded out NYU's “A” bracket competitors.

In the “B” bracket, Dan Brereton went 1-2 (184). He defeated Ed Rose of Oswego State 9-1 before losing his next two matches.

Also competing in the “B” bracket was Cooper Puls (157), who lost both of his bouts.

NYU's grapplers will start a stretch of very important dual matches, beginning with the Metro New England Duals next Saturday, Jan. 28, in Bristol, RI.
