David Obiesie ihas been hired as an assistant coach of the New York University wrestling team. He will be working mainly with the team's upper weights.
A 2000 graduate of the City College of New York with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications, film and video, Obiesie also attended Manhattan College for one year (1995-96) and was a member of the wrestling team (coached by Haberli).
“David is a great addition to our staff,” said NYU head coach
Bruce Haberli. “He was a talented and committed Division I wrestler who was always looking to learn and improve. His approach is what made David into an outstanding collegiate wrestler. Those qualities are what we hope he brings to our program.”
Obiesie served as the Head Wrestling Coach at Fordham Prep from 2002-10. His team won the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Championship in 2005 and placed second in both 2006 and 2007. In his first season, his squad took fourth and won the Sportsmanship Award at the New York State Championship.
A member of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) since 2000, Obiesie continues to serve as a firefighter for Engine Company 62 in the Bronx, NY.
A native and resident of the Bronx, Obiesie has two daughters: Nadia and Annette.
