Led by three players with double-digit kills and a combined .424 hitting percentage, the New York University men's volleyball team defeated Division I Harvard University 3-1 on Friday, March 25, in Cambridge, MA.
The Violets (15-7, 3-3 EIVA Hay), currently tied for #4 in the AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Top 15 Poll, dominated the Crimson (7-10, 0-4 EIVA Hay) on offense and defense, out-killing them 54-41 and holding a 32-17 edge in digs in the 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20) win.
Leading the charge for NYU was
Taylor Fauntleroy, who led all players with 14 kills on the outside. On defense, the sophomore put up five digs while also adding a solo block.
Also with a dominating performance on the wing was
Pat Dodd, who was also in double-digits with 11 kills while hitting .350. He also led the team with three service aces while also picking up three blocks and four digs on defense.
In the middle,
Nick Capriccio continued his dominating offensive streak, recording 13 kills in the match while also hitting a match-best .706. On defense, the freshman picked up three blocks while also serving up two service aces.
Fellow middle and captain
Fran Hodgson also had a strong hitting performance, putting down nine kills and hitting .615 on the night.
Along the back line,
Jay Hayes put together his second double-digit digs performance of 2011, picking up a season-high 11 on the night.
For the Crimson, Matt Jones picked up 13 kills while Chris Gibbons and Dan Schreff both notched four digs.
With the win, NYU stays in the hunt for a berth in the EIVA playoffs. The Violets are currently in third place in the Hay Division and a half-game behind second-place Scared Heart University. The Violets hold the head-to-head tie breaker over the Pioneers.
The Violets return to the court on Sunday when they travel to Springfield, MA, to take on Division III rival and top-ranked Springfield College in a battle that will help decide the EIVA berth in the Division III Molten Championship. First serve is set for 4:00 pm.
