The New York University women's soccer team dropped its second straight contest to a team that reached the NCAA Tournament last season, falling 4-1 to host Richard Stockton College at the Stockton Classic in Pomona, NJ, on Sunday, September 5.

The Violets (0-3) allowed four first-half goals to the Ospreys (3-0) in the final game of the tournament, with the first coming on a long strike in the 7th minute and the other three all coming in an 11-minute flurry.

As it did in the first game of the tournament against #17 Rowan, also an NCAA squad in 2009, NYU rebounded in the second half, scoring just 43 seconds in and stringing together several other excellent chances.  In all the Violets outshot Stockton 12-5 in the half.

“In the program's quest to be UAA champion and compete in the NCAA Tournament, it's important to play against strong opponents like Stockton and Rowan,” said head coach Werner T. Dasbach.  “It has been a tough and challenging weekend, but we are a talented group and we expect this experience to make us stronger and better.”

Senior Filiz Kipcakli was the one Violet to find the back of the net, scoring a fantastic goal in the opening minute of the second half.  Sophomore Serra Tumay won the ball on the left side of the field and fed Kipcakli, who cut inside past her defender and fired a shot into the top right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.

“Serra and Filiz both made great plays,” noted Dasbach.  “That was a beautiful goal.”

Just two minutes later Tumay nearly scored a goal of her own on a free kick.  Her strike was also en route to the top right corner, but this time Osprey keeper Brittney Boyle made a remarkable diving save.

NYU continued firing away after that, but Boyle turned away all four Violet shots on goal.  On the other side of the field senior keeper Alex Walters played 45 scoreless minutes between the pipes for the second straight game while making two stops.

The Violets return to action on Wednesday, September 8, with their first home contest of 2010.  They face off against SUNY Purchase at Rutgers-Newark at 8 pm.
