Norris Leads NYU at NCAA Championships

Junior Earns Honorable Mention All-America Honors

Norris earned Honorable Mention All-American status with his 15th-place national finish.

On Friday, March 19, New York University junior diver Max Norris concluded competition at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at Beloit College in Minneapolis, MN. He finished among the best in the nation in both the one-meter and three-meter dives, single-handedly leading NYU to a 55th-place finish.

On Friday, the Rochester, NY, native, took 20th place in the one-meter dive with a total of 392.60 points.

"It was a really tight contest up and down and Max really battled it out," said NYU diving coach Scott Donie. "Unfortunately, he just missed cracking the top 16, but it was a great effort, and I look forward to returning here next year with Max."

On Wednesday, Norris earned the first All-America honor of his career.

Competing in the three-meter dive, Norris garnered a 15th-place finish in the finals with a total of 402.95 points. By landing within spots 9-16, he automatically earned Honorable Mention All-American status.

Finishers 1-8 are considered All-Americans.

"Max had a great performance for his first national competition," added Donie. "I couldn't be more proud of him, and I'm glad to see him named an All-American diver."

In the preliminaries of the three-meter event, Norris totaled 385.45 points, which was the 12th-highest total.  Although he increased his point total in the finals, he dropped three places overall.

Norris was the lone NCAA qualifier for the men's squad, who finished the season with a 7-4 dual-meet record and a fifth-place finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships (3/17-20).

As a team, NYU accounted for two points behind Norris's 15th-place finish in the three-meter dive.

Kenyon College topped the field with a total of 696 points. The UAA was well-represented with high finishes by members Emory University (3rd place, 259.5 points), Washington University (10th, 127), and Carnegie Mellon University (15th, 57).
