Picking up right where they left off on the track, senior runners Bernier Lauredan and Jesse Schneider have also been cited for their work in the classroom as the pair has been named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine District 1 First Team Academic All-Americans by a vote of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Schneider, a four-time NCAA All-American in cross country and track, and Lauredan, who earned All-America honors as a sophomore, both qualified and ran at last month's NCAA Division III Men's Track & Field Championships in Marietta, OH. Schneider competed in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters, while Lauredan ran in the 800 meters.
Schneider capped his four-year career with a seventh-place finish in the 10,000 meters, his fourth All-America honors. Lauredan, who earned All-America honors as a member of NYU's distance medley relay team in 2007, finished fifth in his heat of the 800 meters and did not qualify for the finals.
A journalism major in NYU's College of Arts and Science, Schneider earned District I Second Team Academic All-America honors last year, while Lauredan, a communications major in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, is receiving his first CoSIDA Academic All-America honor to go along with his two Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar citations.
In order to qualify as an Academic All-American, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average while competing in at least half of the team's contests.
Both runners will now be placed on the ballot for national Academic All-America honors.
