NCAA Championships Results
Senior Jesse Schneider, competing in his last collegiate race, and sophomore Matt Turlip, running in his first NCAA final, both fell short of All-America status in their respective events on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marietta, OH.
Competing in oppressive heat conditions on the final day of events, Schneider finished 12th in the 5,000 meters, while Turlip took 11th place in the finals of the 1,500 meters.
Schneider, who earned All-America honors with a seventh-place showing in the 10,000 meters on Thursday, posted a time of 15:11.06 and fell four places short of being an All-American for the fifth time in his illustrious career.
Schneider also earned All-America honors three times in cross county (2006-08) during his four-year NYU career.
Peter Kosgei of Hamilton College won the 10,000 meters with a Don Drumm Stadium record time of 14:39.03.
"Jesse ran tough and gave his best effort in very unkind conditions and after having gone 10,000 meters two days ago," said NYU head coach Nick McDonough. "He's had a great four-year career."
In the 1,500, Turlip posted a time of 3:59.78 in his 11th-place run. He had qualified for the finals with his seventh-place time of 3:53.85 in Thursday's preliminary heat.
Ty Griffin of Mount Union College won the event with a stadium record of 3:53.41.
"It was a tactical race and times were slow due to the heat," McDonough explained. "Matt was boxed toward the back of the pack most of the way and was out-kicked down the stretch. "But, he had a great last month for us. It just wasn't his day."
Schneider's All-American performance in the 10,000 meters was worth two points for the team, the only points scored by the Violets at the championships.
NYU finished 69th in the 81-team competition.
