Miele brought the program to new heights in 2024-25, as the women’s team finished as National Champion Runner-ups, the highest finish in team history. His swimmers won five National Championships, as College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Swimmer of the Year Kaley McIntyre won three individual national titles (50-, 100-, 200-yard freestyle), Nicole Ranile won one (200-yard butterfly), and four Violets (McIntyre, Ranile, Elle Motekaitis, Isabel Oldham) combined to win the 800-yard freestyle relay.

The men’s team went undefeated in dual meets (8-0) and tied its highest finish with a fourth-place performance at the NCAA Division III Championships.

Overall, the women’s team earned All-America honors in 28 events at the NCAA’s, while the men’s squad produced 24. A total of 22 NYU swimmers & divers (12 women, 10 men) captured All-America accolades.

NYU did not compete in 2020-21 due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, a total of 16 men and 16 women earned UAA All-Academic honors.

The 2019-20 season featured 26 team members earning 60 All-America honors, all qualifying for the NCAA Championships but unable to compete when the event was canceled due to Covid-19. Individually, Honore Collins and Sydney Catron led the women’s team with seven All-America honors, while Giorgio DelGrosso led the men with four.

The women’s team finished the season ranked #6 in the nation by the CSCAA and tied their best showing ever by placing second at the UAA Championships as Miele and his assistants received UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The men’s team, which was ranked #14 in the nation by the CSCAA at the end of the season after having risen as high as #6 during the campaign, finished third at the UAA Championships.

In addition to all the accolades achieved in the pool, both squads also earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team Awards in both the fall and spring. Collins was named CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American At-Large and NYU Junior Scholar Athlete of the Year, while 19 team members earned UAA All-Academic honors.

In 2017-18, the men posted a near-perfect 7-1 record, while the women ended the season at 4-4. The men posted a sixth-place national finish and the women produced a 10th-place result. In addition, both teams achieved second-place finishes at their respective UAA Championships. Ian Rainey became the first male swimmer in program history to win an NCAA Championships event by capturing both the 200-yard and 400-yard IM. He went on to earn NYU’s Senior Athlete of the Year Award.

Rainey was just one of a plethora of student-athletes who made their marks at the NCAA’s in 2018 as the men’s squad earned 17 All-America honors and 14 Honorable Mentions. Rainey finished with a total of six honors and Chad Moody had five while DelGrosso, Tim Kou and Nianzhong Liu each had four.

The women’s team captured seven All-America awards and 11 Honorable Mentions that season. Collins led the way with four total awards (two All-America, two Honorable Mentions), while Grace Wakabayashi earned three honors. In addition, Catron was recognized as NYU’s Female Freshman Athlete of the Year.

For their achievements, Collins and Carlos Colmenares were named NYU Female and Male Freshman Athletes of the Year, respectively.

Both the men and women were recognized as CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams. In addition, 34 team members (20 women, 14 men) earned UAA All-Academic honors.

The 2015-16 season was also outstanding for both the men’s and women’s programs. The women went a perfect 8-0 in dual meets and established a then-best-ever eighth-place finish at the NCAA’s, while the men went 8-1 and earned a ninth-place finish. The women earned a collective 25 All-America accolades, while the men took 22. Gibbs and Isabelle Kitze led the way for the women, as each swimmer captured five All-America honors. Kou and Austin Palmer led the men with four each.

Miele’s student-athletes also had success outside of the pool, as 23 team members (12 men, 11 women) earned UAA All-Academic honors and the CSCAA honored both squads as Scholar All-America Teams.

During the 2014-15 season, both teams recorded perfect 9-0 records and ninth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. The campaign also featured both teams winning Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships. For his efforts, Miele was named both the men’s and women’s Coach of the Meet at the ECAC Championships, while he and his assistants were also named UAA Men’s Coaching Staff of the Meet.

At the NCAA Championships that season, the men earned a collective 24 All-America honors while the women produced 20. Jerry Crowley led the way for the men with five while Emily Doerner had six for the women. Doerner was also selected as NYU’s Senior Athlete of the Year.

In 2013-14, both programs posted identical 6-2 records. The women captured first place at the ECAC Championships, while the men recorded a second-place finish as Miele was named both the men’s and women’s Coach of the Meet.

That season, Miele also coached two All-Americans. On the men’s side, diver Austen Blease placed sixth in the one-meter dive and on the women’s side Doerner finished eighth in the 100-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships. Team members also produced 12 Honorable Mention All-America performances as the women finished 28th and the men 31st at the NCAA Championships. Both squads also earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors.

In his first season with the Violets in 2012-13, Miele led the men’s team to a second-place finish at the ECAC Championships while the women took fourth.

Prior to his return to NYU, Miele lifted both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs at the Stevens Institute of Technology to national prominence. Before his arrival in Hoboken, NJ, neither the men’s nor women’s program had produced an NCAA qualifier. In his six years with the Ducks, Miele coached 31 NCAA All-Americans, 32 NCAA Honorable Mention All-Americans and the first two NCAA National Champions in school history. The first of those National Champions, Laura Barito, went on to be named the NCAA Woman of the Year – just the third Division III athlete ever to receive the honor.

Before being appointed to the helm of the Stevens programs, Miele spent four seasons as an assistant to Head Coach Bob Sorensen with the NYU men’s swimming & diving team. During that time, he helped coach nine NCAA qualifiers who went on to earn seven All-America honors and 10 Honorable Mention All-America accolades.

Miele also helped the Violets capture back-to-back ECAC Division III Championships in 2004-05 and 2005-06, as well as record a 19th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in ’05-06, their best-ever finish at the national meet to that point. Sorensen, Miele and the rest of the Violet coaches earned UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors that season after leading the team to a best-ever second-place finish at the UAA Championships.

Miele, who graduated from NYU’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Marketing, was a four-year member and three-year captain of the Violets’ men’s swimming & diving team. A two-time All-American in the 100-yard butterfly, he qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of his four seasons and was named team MVP all four years.

Miele, who was inducted into the NYU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016, earned his Master of Science degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Sports Management from Brooklyn College in 2006.

A native of Dix Hills, NY, Miele resides in Manhattan with his wife Mary and their children Bryce, Trent and Alexis.
