The NYU-Poly women's volleyball team celebrated it's 25th year anniversary in style in 2009 as the team became the school's first program in any sport to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The Fighting Blue Jays advanced thanks to a thrilling, come-from-behind victory over Sage Colleges in the Skyline Conference Championship game. Down 12-9, and later 14-11 in the fifth set tie-breaker, Poly rallied to tie it 14-14. Then, down 15-14 and facing the end of their season, the Jays rallied for three more points and captured the athletic program's first NCAA playoff berth.
Ironically, the Jays and Violets opened their seasons' against each other and now, at least for one team, will end their season against each other. NYU defeated Poly in three sets, but since that loss the Jays have gone 25-8 and a perfect 11-0 in the Skyline. Poly also picked up key wins over regional opponents William Patterson and Hunter College, and took Ramapo, Baruch, and Stevens Tech to five sets, before losing.
Junior Meredith Shipman (Sugarland, TX / Elkins HS) was voted the Skyline Tournament MVP and was named to the All-Conference First Team, while the Skyline also tabbed sophomore Victoria Kalvert (Missouri City, TX / Elkins HS) as the season MVP. Freshman Corey Loupee (Crown Point, IN / Boone Grove HS) was named Rookie of the Year and fellow rookie Nicole Breitbart (Ridgewood, NJ / Ridgewood HS) was also named to the Second Team All-Conference squad.
