The New York University men's soccer defeated Maritime College 5-0 on Tuesday, September 8, at Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ, extending the Violets' winning streak to four consecutive matches to open the 2026 season.
With the victory, NYU made program history by scoring at least five goals in three consecutive matches for the first time.
The victory also marks NYU's longest winning streak since the 2021 season, when the Violets won six consecutive matches from September 5 through September 21.
"Midweek games tend to be difficult with classes in session and travel, and it took us a while to find our quality and mitigate technical mistakes," said Head Coach Kim Wyant. "But it was great to see that we picked it up quickly and the team grew into the game as it went along."
NYU broke through in the seventh minute as Kyle Sakalosky delivered a well-placed cross to the top of the box to Demir Calkap, who redirected the ball to Kacey Pasha in front of the net. Pasha connected on the finish, driving his shot past the Maritime goalkeeper to give the Violets an early 1-0 advantage.
With the defense holding firm and the Violets controlling possession on the attacking end, NYU carried its 1-0 advantage into halftime. The Violets held Maritime without a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, allowing few opportunities in their defensive third while maintaining consistent pressure on the other end.
NYU doubled its advantage in the 61st minute when Calkap delivered a well-placed feed from outside the box to Lazar Mijatovic, who rifled a shot into the top-left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
In the 75th minute, Vic Williams dribbled through multiple Maritime defenders before delivering a pass to Audric Ma, who finished the opportunity to extend the Violets' advantage to 3-0.
NYU added another in the 81st minute when Mark Shields delivered a pass in front of the net to Fabio Orozco, who converted the opportunity for a 4-0 lead.
The Violets wasted little time adding their fifth. In the 83rd minute, Shields found himself in space with an assist from Orozco with a one-on-one opportunity against the Maritime goalkeeper. Shields drove his shot past the keeper to cap NYU's scoring at 5-0.
"I was very happy with the shutout," Wyant added. "We have lots of talent on the team, and it's exciting to be a part of."
The Violets will return to action on Saturday, September 12, when they host Kean University at 11 a.m. at Lubetkin Field back in Newark, NJ.
