The New York University women's soccer team kicked off its 2026 home campaign with a tie against #8 Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, September 5, at Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ.
After a scoreless first half, the Violets led in shots 5-4, 4-3 on goal.
Julia Spang and Tusca Mahmoudpour each took two shots that were saved by MITs' Maddy Noll.
In the 36th, Maddy Tohanczyn came up with two back-to-back saves for the Violets to send the teams into the locker room tied up at the half.
The second half remained scoreless, but the Violets' offense was strong, getting off 10 shots.
In the last two minutes of the match, Mahmoudpour took a shot from the top right corner of the box but, Noll was able to poke it away to keep the Violets out.
NYU finished the match leading in shots 15-7, 9-3 on goal. Spang had four of the shots, while Mahmoudpour and Kate Vezzani each followed with three.
Tohanczyn made five saves between the posts.
"I was impressed with how we played," said Head Coach Scott Waddell. "We created a few chances where we could have scored, but MIT is one of the top programs in the nation. We we were up against a really good opponent and I thought we played well."
The Violets return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 9, in Newark, NJ. The match vs. Stevens is set to kickoff at 7pm.
