The #15-ranked New York University wrestling team posted a 2–1 record at the ESU Quad Meet, hosted by East Stroudsburg University on Sunday, February 1, in East Stroudsburg, Pa.
The Violets earned victories over New Jersey City University (NJCU) and Shippensburg University before falling to host East Stroudsburg University (ESU), ranked #22 in the Division II national rankings, by just two points in the final match of the day.
NYU opened the day against NJCU with strong performances from Xavier Diaz (125), Robert Leeds (157), and a 17–2 technical fall by Cristian Gioia. Dmitry Derbedyenyev added a pin at 184, while newcomer Mo Talebi recorded an 18–3 technical fall at 197 before Nathan Faxon sealed the 28–15 victory with a pin at heavyweight.
The Violets followed the opening win with another strong performance against Shippensburg. Diaz scored a major decision at 125 to start the match and the Violets kept momentum with a pin from Jacob Venezia at 133 and a major decision win from James Carlock at 141.
Robert Leeds recorded a 15-0 technical fall at 157 and Gioia earned an 18–3 win at 174 to secure the Violets' 35–14 victory.
In the final match of the day against ESU, Diaz and Venezia opened with wins at 125 and 133, respectively, while Carlock added another victory for the Violets.
After the middle portion of the match, the Violets responded as Gioia recorded a pin at the 2:30 mark to give NYU a 15–13 lead. Talebi followed with a technical fall at 197 to push the Violets ahead 20–16, but the Warriors answered. Hosts ESU escaped with a narrow 22–20 win to close out the day.
The Violets return to action Saturday, February 7, as they host Bridgewater State University on Alumni Day at 11:00 a.m. before facing the United States Coast Guard Academy later in the day at 2:30 p.m.
