In a battle of top-25 teams, the #22 New York University women's soccer team earned its first University Athletic Association (UAA) win of the season, defeating #9 Carnegie Mellon University, 2-0, on Friday, October 23, in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Violets got on the board in the first 10 minutes with a goal from Lily Smoley. Sari Frankl played off a ball to the foot of Smoley, who chipped it over the Tartans' keeper and into the back of the net.
"Lily has been playing well and I'm happy she was able to get on the score sheet," said Head Coach Scott Waddell "She deserved it."
Meredith Theis had an opportunity a few minutes later to double the lead, sending a shot into the top right, but it was saved by the Tartans.
Both teams were evenly matched with both collecting two shots on-goal in the first half.
The Violets came out pushing in the second half as they searched for their second goal.
Smoley, Frankl, and Sonia Neighbors all had chances to add to the scoresheet.
In the 86th minute, Marlee Scanlon was inches away from adding a goal for the Violets. She sent a curling ball to the center of the goal that was just poked away by the Tartans' goalkeeper.
With less than two minutes to play, Leah Berg was taken down in the penalty box, earning a chance to double the score. Berg stepped up to the spot and sunk the ball into the back of the net with ease to give NYU a 2-0 advantage as the clock ran down.
"A road win in the UAA is always special," added Waddell. "And against a top 10 team is even more special. The team really worked hard and believed all game."
Smoley led NYU with three shots and Frankl added two. Five other Violets each tallied one shot.
Maddy Tohanczyn made two saves between the posts, keeping the clean sheet on the road.
NYU continues its UAA roadtrip when they travel to Cleveland to take on Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, October 25. Kickoff is set for 1:30 PM.
