The No. 21 New York University women's volleyball team opened the NYU Welcome-To-October Invitational with a match victory against Vassar College on Friday, October 2, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
The Violets swept the Brewers in three sets, 25-17, 25-11, 25-15, to secure the win.
"The team is really locked in and excited," said Head Coach
Andrew Brown. "We did a great job at taking care of our opportunities against this opponent."
In the opening frame, NYU came out strong against Vassar, building an 11-3 advantage on back-to-back kills and service aces from
Grace Nelson and
Kate Scherlacher, respectively. The Violets maintained distance to close out set one.
NYU carried that momentum into the second set, never trailing. Back-to-back service aces from Scherlacher and kills from
Chloe Lemons helped NYU maintain its advantage to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Violets kept the momentum rolling in the third, with four consecutive kills from Lemons helping NYU regain control after Vassar tied the set at 7-7. Scherlacher added three service aces late in the frame as NYU pulled ahead to close out the set.
Lemons led the Violets offensively with eight kills, while Scherlacher recorded a team-high eight service aces.
Lily Leung and
Alden Roberts anchored the defense with eight digs apiece, while Scherlacher and Roberts each tallied 13 assists, leading NYU's setting efforts.
The Violets will take the court again tomorrow, October 3, for two matches, beginning with a 10 a.m. matchup against Stockton University at the John A. Paulson Center.
