The #15-ranked New York University wrestling team defeated the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks on Saturday, January 24th, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
Prior to the start of the matinee match, NYU honored its five seniors with a Senior Day ceremony. After taking an early lead, the Violets leaned on their final wrestlers of the match to secure a 22-21 victory over the Ducks.
NYU started off with a win in the 125lb weight class by Xavier Diaz. The momentum continued at 133, where Harrison Gordon delivered a technical fall at the 3:13 mark.
After the middle portion of the lineup, NYU answered back at 174 pounds behind Ty Finn, who also posted a technical fall to keep the Violets within striking distance.
The comeback continued at 184 and 197 pounds, as Dmitry Derbedenyev and Justin Mayes both picked up major decision victories by scores of 14-5 and 14-6, respectively.
NYU held on through the final bout to secure the Senior Day victory, winning 22-21.
"It was a lot closer than I expected but the guys pulled through," said Associate Head Coach Corey Luce. "I'm expecting these guys to learn from a lot of the mistakes now and put on a better show against TCNJ."
The Violets are back in action later today when they host TCNJ at 6:00 PM at the John A. Paulson Center.
