The
#20-ranked New York University wrestling team dominated the Mariner Duals, hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, with three wins on Saturday, January 10, in Kings Point, NY.
The Violets defeated New England College, Maine Maritime Academy, and Plymouth State University by scores of 42-9, 41-3, and 51-6, respectively.
Opening the afternoon against the Pilgrims, NYU won eight of the dual's 10 bouts, two of which were won by forfeit.
Ethan Rothman,
John Gleason, and
Anthony DeRosa each recorded falls in the 157, 165, and 197-pound bouts, respectively.
Vincenzo Napolitana posted a major decision at 149, while
Dmitry Derbedyenyev posted a tech fall within the first period of 184-pound contest.
Cristian Gioia edged out his opponent at 174 for a 5-4 decision.
The Violets then took on the Mariners, in which NYU dropped just one bout.
With wins by forfeit at 125, 157, 165, and 174,
Matthew D'Arcy added to the tally with a pin in the 133-pound tilt.
Both
Aiden Tak and
Yaman Shehadeh registered decisions in their respective classes, while DeRosa collected a tech fall at 197.
Ending the day against the Panthers, the Violets once again conceded just one bout, which was a forfeit.
All nine of NYU's wins resulted in bonus points, including pins by
Neale Pathak, Gioia, and Derbedyenyev.
D'Arcy, Tak, and Shehadeh each recorded tech falls.
"I think today's performance demonstrates the depth of this team," said Associate Head Coach
Corey Luce. "To come out here and wrestle three dual meets and only lose 2 total matches you can't really ask for much more."
NYU's next contest is scheduled for Saturday, January 17th, at the NY/PA Duals, hosted by Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Violets are set to take on the host Colonels along with Elizabethtown University and Keystone College.
