The
#20-ranked New York University wrestling team ended its National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals campaign with two more wins in the consolation bracket to finish ninth in the DIII bracket, on Saturday, January 10, in Cedar Falls, IA.
The Violets posted a 26-20 win over Cornell College in the consolation semi-finals before edging Baldwin Wallace University 21-20 in the ninth-place match.
NYU won the first four bouts in its dual against the Rams, including a tech fall by
Alexander Diaz in the 125-pound tilt and a pin by
Jacob Venezia in the 133-pound contest.
James Carlock and
John Mairano each registered decisions in the 141 and 149-pound classes, respectively.
In the 174-pound bout,
Ty Finn pinned his opponent inside of three minutes to give the Violets six more points.
Justin Mayes closed out the team scoring with a 7-1 decision in the 184-pound class.
Facing the Yellowjackets in the ninth-place match, NYU tallied bonus points in three of its six bout wins to eek out a one-point victory.
Diaz once again posted a tech fall at 125 before Venezia collected an 18-14 decision at 133.
Following losses at both 141 and 149, Roberts Leeds pinned his opponent in the second period of the 157-pound bout.
Finn, who trailed 4-1 in the second period of the 174-pound contest, came back with seven unanswered points to earn a decision.
Mayes added four more team points with a 14-3 major decision at 184, which proved significant, as the Violets dropped the final two bouts of the dual.
NYU's next contest is scheduled for Saturday, January 17th, at the NY/PA Duals, hosted by Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Violets are set to take on the host Colonels along with Elizabethtown University and Keystone College.
