Women’s Soccer Drops Home Opener

Violets Take Split in Opening Weekend

The New York University women's soccer team opened the 2025 home schedule on Sunday afternoon, hosting the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (CMS) Athenas for the first time.

The Violets looked to capitalize on a resounding 6-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in the season opener two days prior. CMS capitalized on a first-half goal to steal the momentum in the match and doubled their tally to score the program's first win, 2-0, over NYU.

NYU established possession for the majority of the first half, leading the way with eight shots and three on target. The Athenas jumped ahead in the 33rd minute when Frankie Fragola settled a corner kick in the box and found an opening to slot the ball into the bottom left corner. CMS took its 1-0 lead to halftime.

Fragola struck again just under half an hour later, streaking into the 18-yard box and redirecting a cross from Ava Allen across the line. Her brace put the Athenas ahead 2-0 and allowed them to shift their focus to defending for the final 30 minutes.

The Violets' best chance to get on the board in the final stretch was in the 77th minute, when junior midfielder Sari Frankl rang the crossbar and nearly netted their first goal of the game. NYU totaled three shots on target in the final third of the match. Sonia Neighbors led the team with two shots on goal.

Athenas keeper Sadie Brown made four saves in the shutout win.

NYU will look to right the ship on Saturday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Ewing to face The College of New Jersey. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
