The
19-ranked New York University wrestling team competed at the NY/New England Duals on Saturday, February 8, in New London, CT, hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The Violets fell to fell to the #11 Bears in the first dual of the day, but recovered with a 34-9 win over Bridgewater State University.
Against the USCGA,
Cooper Pontelandolfo and
Harrison Gordon each picked up major decisions, while
Trent Furman earned a regular decision. NYU was defeated by the hosts, 29-11.
However, the Violets dominated BSU, winning each of the first six bouts of the dual.
Nick Kruczynski recorded a pin in the 149-pound bout, while both
James Carlock and Pontelandolfo registered tech falls in the 133 and 157-pound bouts, respectively.
Furman also added a tech fall in the 184-pound bout, and
Evan Anderson closed out the dual with a pin.
John Mairano earned bonus points with a major decision in the 149-pound class. NYU claimed bonus points in six of the dual's 10 bouts.
Both Pontelandolfo and Furman went 2-0 on the day.
NYU will now travel to Cleveland, OH to compete at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, hosted by Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) on Saturday, February 15, at 11 a.m.
