The New York University men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season in an 88-83 defeat at Yeshiva University on Wednesday, December 3, in New York, NY.
The Violets began the game hot, knocking down six three-pointers inside of the first six minutes and racing out to a 24-8 advantage. The two teams then traded baskets for the next several possessions, as NYU led 31-19 at the midway point of the first half.
With just under three minutes remaining in the opening frame and the Violets up 41-28, the Maccabees ended the half on a 14-5 run to cut the deficit to four going into the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Violets pushed their advantage up to 54-47. However, NYU went the next six minutes without hitting a field goal while Yeshiva went on a 12-1 run to take its first lead of the night, 59-55.
The Violets were unable to regain their lead for the remainder of the contest, falling behind by as much as 12.
Down 73-61 with under eight minutes left in regulation, NYU began to claw back with six consecutive points. At the under-four minute mark, the Maccabees grew their lead back to double-digits, 82-71.
The Violets continued to fight back, though, outscoring Yeshiva 10-3 over the next three minutes to get to within one bucket.
After Yeshiva made one of two free throws to go up 86-82,
Carnegie Johnson was fouled on the other end. The junior made his first shot but missed the second, which was promptly rebounded by
Andrew Waldman.
On the extra possession,
Darren Rubin put up a shot from beyond the arc to potentially tie the game, but it went in-and-out of the basket. The Maccabees collected the loose ball and iced the game with two more free throws.
Despite the loss, Johnson continued his impressive start to his NYU career with 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field. Waldman fell two rebounds shy of a double-double with 14 points and eight boards.
The Violets will look to bounce back with a home game against Farmingdale State College on Saturday, December 3, at the John A. Paulson Center. Tip-off is set for 1pm.
