The New York University wrestling team defeated all three of its opponents at the Metropolitan Duals on Sunday, November 16. The event was hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, NY.
The Violets faced the University of Southern Maine, host USMMA and Hunter College.
In their opening match, NYU defeated Southern Maine 39-6 as three Violets recorded falls. At 141,
James Carlock pinned his opponent in just 26 seconds, while
Robert Leeds (157) in 6:32 and
Justin Mayes (184) in 2:15 did the same to their foes.
The Violets were equally as dominant in their second match, beating USMMA 44-8.
Alexander Diaz began the match with a pin at 125 in only 1:29.
Nicky Bell (174) pinned his opponent just a bit quicker (1:20), and heavyweight
Nathan Faxon concluded the match with another pin in a swift 53 seconds.
Mayes bumped up to 197 in his match and defeated his ranked opponent in a 6-1 decision.
NYU won all but one of the matches in its 54-3 victory over Hunter to end the day's activities.
Diaz, Bell and Faxon again recorded pins for the Violets. They were joined in that result by
Alexander Kaufmann (165) and
Dmitry Derbedyenyev (194).
"I'm very happy with the team that we put out there today," said Associate Head Coach
Corey Luce. "We lost a total of five matches out of 30, and our guys who lost were right in it but just fell short."
The NYU wrestlers return to action when they compete at the NYS Collegiate Championships in Syracuse, NY, on Saturday, November 22.
