Women’s Swimming and Diving Victorious in Season Opener

Violets Defeat Division II Golden Rams At Home

The New York University women's swimming and diving team started off its dual meet season with a 184-53 victory against Division II West Chester University on Saturday, October 11 at the Palladium Athletic Facility in New York, NY.

The Violets showcased their depth, winning all of their 11 events in the season opener.

The meet kicked off with a strong start for the Violets in the distance events. In the 1000-yard freestyle, senior Emery Muller and junior Aanya Wala went 1-2, with Muller touching the wall first in a blistering 10:38.12, followed by Wala at 10:49.09.

Nicole Ranile claimed first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:09.39. She also finished first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.86.

Junior Lian Jeong Engle, a transfer from American University, had a standout day. She won the 100-yard freestyle (52.43) and placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.47).

"I'm incredibly proud of how the team showed up today," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "It was a great performance from everyone and considering that they've been training hard for the past few weeks, it's no surprise. They raced better than I expected. It's a good start. I look forward to the upcoming weeks of training and racing."

On the diving boards, senior Meera Kasturi brought her experience forward by winning both the 1-meter (271.05) and 3-meter dive (288.75). She was supported by teammates Katherine Taylor and Isabella Reyes, who dominated the competition in a 1-2-3 finish in both 1-meter and 3-meter events.

"The meet was a great beginning to the year," said Diving Head Coach Todd Kolean. "All three women made the qualifying scores for the NCAA Regional Champoionships, which astounded me. Meera showed she's going to be a force to reckon with."

The Violets will look to carry this momentum into their next competition as they continue their season. They return to action for a diving-only competition at the RPI Go Red Diving Invitational in Troy, NY, on Saturday, October 25. Meanwhile, the women's swim team travels across the city to Columbia University for their meet on Friday, October 31.
