The
#2-ranked New York University men's volleyball team opened its 2025 home season by sweeping Hunter College on Thursday, January 23, at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan.
The Violets (4-0) were in control throughout, beating the Hawks (0-1) by scores of 25-17, 25-12, and 25-22.
Hunter scored the first point of the match, the only time NYU trailed in the opening set.
The Violets scored the first two points of the second set and led the entire way.
In the final set, NYU fell behind 2-0 before scoring the next four points and taking the lead for good. The Violets went ahead by as many as seven points before clinching the match on a call by
Matthew Warter.
Emerson Evans led the the team with nine kills,
Lucas Osiecki followed closely behind with seven. The Violets' middle blockers,
Ry Kagan and
Buddy Cohen, were strong at the net with four and three blocks, respectively. In the back row, Evans led with five digs while
Zach Knudsen had four.
"It was a good performance by the young men tonight, we continued to hit really well," said Head Coach Piña. "This weekend I expect us to play at a high level, we have a lot of talent on this team we just have to control the mental part of the game."
The Violets return to action when they host New Jersey City University (NJCU) and Arcadia University for a tri-meet back at the Paulson Center. NYU will face NJCU at 11am to begin the proceedings.
