The New York University men's volleyball team (8-6) lost its second United Volleyball Conference (UVC) match of the season, falling to Elmira College (7-8) on Saturday, March 9, at Elmira's Speidel Gymnasium in Elmira, NY.
The
13th-ranked Violets played out three tough sets, losing 25-19, 26-24, 25-19.
"We ran into a very determined Elmira squad. They had a very good defensive plan against us and were able to contain our middle attack which has been our strength all season long," said Head Coach José Piña. "
Zach Knudsen had a strong match for us on defense and on serve receptions. But in the end, Elmira came out on top."
NYU started strong, taking a 7-4 lead but couldn't hold it. Elmira tied the game at 9-9 after scoring three in a row and neither team could pull away until 14-14. At that point, Elmira went on another three-point streak.
The Violets fought back to a one-point gap at 19-18, but the Soaring Eagles then scored five unanswered points and NYU only added a
Matthew Warter kill the rest of the way.
In the second set, NYU led early, then Elmira went ahead 7-4. NYU tied the score nine more times. Down 23-20, the Violets scored three successive points, featuring a Warter kill and service ace. But, the Soaring Eagles closed out the set by scoring the next two points.
NYU could not find any momentum in the third, unable to lead the whole set. The Violets tied the score at 11-11 following a four-point streak that included kills from Warter and
Luke Boyer, as well as a
Ry Kagan service ace.
From then on, the Soaring Eagles led, the biggest gap being six points at the end.
Warter was the Violets' kills leader with 13, followed by Kagan with six.
Devyn Nguyen and
Zach Knudsen were match leaders in assists and digs, with 31 and 12, respectively.
The Violets continue UVC play against Hobart College in Geneva, NY, tomorrow, March 10, at 1 p.m.
