On the second day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday, November 16, the #6 seeded Violets faced the #4 Carnegie Mellon University Tartans.
The Violets went to five sets against the Tartans during the regular season. Looking for redemption in the postseason, the Violets battled it out but fell short again, losing in four sets.
The Tartans' offense operated efficiently in the first set, and they won 25-18. Pressure from the Violets in the second set forced Carnegie Mellon to be error-heavy and NYU took advantage. With the help of
Jessica Spierenburg's four kills, the Violets won 25-19.
Both teams battled it out in the third set, staying neck and neck until they were even at 26-26. Carnegie Mellon closed the set at 28-26 with two consecutive kills, putting them one set away from victory.
On their last life, the Violets were fired up to force a fifth set.
Ava Launsbach and
Alden Roberts diversified the offense, feeding the ball to all three positions. Despite this pressure, the Tartans were able to prevail and take the fourth set 26-24.
Match leaders included Spierenburg, a consistent attacker for the Violets, who racked up 13 kills with an impressive .500 hitting percentage.
Grace Nelson and
Chloe Lemons weren't far behind, posting 11 and nine kills, respectively.
Yooni Park was a force to be reckoned with on defense, reporting 27 digs.
The Violets now await the announcement of at-large bids for the NCAA Championship Tournament. The announcement will be made on Monday. The first round of Regionals begins Thursday, November 21.
