New York University's
11th-ranked women's volleyball team won all three of its matches as part of the NYU Mid-September Quad at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan on Friday and Saturday, September 15-16.
The Violets swept Marymount University (VA) on Friday night via set scores of 25-7, 25-19, 25-13. Then, on Saturday, NYU defeated both Emerson College (25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15) and Virginia Wesleyan University (25-22, 25-19, 16-25, 25-14) in four sets.
NYU has now won 10 straight matches and sits at 10-1 on the season after dropping its season opener. The Violets will carry this momentum into the first University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin of the campaign next weekend in Cleveland, OH.
"Our team's depth and grit allowed us to continue to work at adapting to different styles of play," said head coach
Andrew Brown. "Each team was unique with how they attacked us and each game they threw their best punches. We had to defend and find a way to forge ahead.
"It took a collective effort and to be able to do it over the course of three matches shows how dialed in our team is."
Against Marymount, the Violets controlled things throughout as they hit .303 as a team and limited the Saints to a -.021 clip.
Haley Holz led the way with a match-high nine kills (.421) while
Grace Nelson had seven (.385),
Leela Anvekar added five (.400) and
Lauren Scheffler finished with four (.364).
Ava Launsbach delivered a match-high 19 assists and
Lindsey Hirano brought up a match-high 18 digs.
In the Emerson match, the Violets looked poised for another sweep but the Lions eeked out a two-point set win in the third. The fourth set was all NYU, however, as the team collected 18 kills and hit .385 to finish things off.
Four Violets had double-digit kills against Emerson, led by Holz's season- and match-high 21 on .444 hitting. Nelson,
Ella Weider and
Camille Nazor notched 10 kills apiece which set a new season high for Weider and Nazor. Launsbach (24) and
Dominique Drust (18) combined for 52 assists while Hirano finished with 19 digs.
NYU won in similar fashion against Virginia Wesleyan, taking the first two sets before falling 25-16 in the third. But, a dominant fourth set that saw the Violets hit .406 led to a 25-14 triumph and extended the win streak to double figures.
Holz stayed hot in the weekend finale, collecting 14 kills along with five digs. Nelson also had 14 kills and six digs of her own while Weider added nine and Nazor finished with seven.
Launsbach (27) and Drust (14) once again totaled 40+ assists between them with Drust notching a double-double (20 digs) and Launsbach firing six service aces. Hirano remained steady at libero, recording 19 digs and three aces.
"In terms of going into UAA play, continuing to focus on the process, getting better each day this week and knowing that this first round of UAA is going to be exciting and we're looking forward to going on the road," Brown added.
The Violets will take on both Brandeis University and host Case Western Reserve Universty on the first day of UAA Round Robin #1 on Saturday, September 23, in Cleveland, OH.
