Gautham Dasari had a match-high 16 kills as New York University's
ninth-ranked men's volleyball team topped Concordia University-Wisconsin in four sets on Sunday at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
The Violets bounced back after a three-set loss to second-ranked Vassar College yesterday, winning today by set scores of 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20 to improve to 12-6 on the season.
"With the exception of game three, where we came out flat, we played well, executed on offense," said head coach
José Piña." We were cleaner than yesterday overall...it was a good win because it keeps us alive for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament."
NYU scored the first five points of the match and never trailed in the first, compiling 13 total blocks in the opening set while
Kyle Rasmussen posted four kills to give the Violets a six-point victory.
The Falcons scored the first four points of the second, but NYU went on a 10-2 run from there to go ahead by four (10-6). The Violets never trailed again and a
Brian Kellogg service ace sealed the win and put the hosts on the verge of a sweep.
Concordia didn't go away though, racing out to a 16-8 advantage in the third after an NYU error. The Violets later came within three, 21-18, on a block from Kellogg and
Robert Allen, but four more Violet errors gave the Falcons a win and forced a fourth.
NYU hit .519 in the fourth, including a whopping nine kills in the frame from Dasari, never trailing after the eighth point and fending off a late Falcon rally to put the match away.
"Next on to New Paltz which is a very tough team, especially when they play at home," Piña added. "If we are able to defeat New Paltz then we'll be second in the conference and that will be very advantageous to us, getting a bye in the conference tournament. We did what we had to do today."
Dasari added four block assists, three digs and an ace to his match high in kills. Osiecki finished with 10 kills, four digs, two blocks and a pair of aces.
Buddy Cohen posted seven kills (.778) and seven total blocks while
Ry Kagan had four kills and four blocks.
Ryan Li notched a match-high 38 assists to go with five digs and three blocks.
Zach Knudsen brought up a team-high seven digs with five assists.
NYU returns to United Volleyball Conference (UVC) play in its next match, taking on 11th-ranked SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, March 29, at 7:00 p.m. in New Paltz, NY.
